Infapro (innoprise Face Project)

Is engaged in the rehabilitation of tropical rainforest that has been severely damaged by felling in the past. The remnant vegetation suffers from climbers and creepers impeding forest regrowth. The project area is situated in a 1 million ha concession in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo. Innoprise/Rakyat Berjaya manages this area on behalf of the Sabah Foundation to support the state's social programmes.
Apart from climber cutting, a large number of indigenous tree species are being planted according to the 'line enrichment' method. The project is under the supervisor of steering committee consistent of Innoprise, the Face Foundation and Forest Research Institute Malaysia. At the derby Danum Valley Field Centre, research is being carried out to improve planting and cultivation methods. After rehabilitation, the area will be managed sustainably to form a buffer zone for the Danum Valley conservation area.

It is probably the largest enrichment planting effort in the world. Many logged forests suffer from a dense cover of climbers impeding natural regeneration. Due to the vast experience gained with this method for forest rehabilitation there is an increasing interest from forest managers and concession holders in the wider region.
The Face Foundation owns the CO2 credits, while the forest and all the other proceeds belong to Innoprise.

Certification:

As the project area forms a small part of a large Forest Management Unit within the concession area, the project has not been individually subjected to FSC certification. SGS had issued a Certificate of Project Design after testing the project against criteria formulated in the Kyoto Protocol and the Marrakech Accords.

Monitoring of the project is a collaborative effort of the Face Foundation, the Institute of Forest Ecosystem Research (Czech Republic) and Infarpro.
